Calvani Farms is a third and forth generation farm located in the Pecos Valley near Carlsbad, New Mexico. Carlsbad is located in the Southeastern corner of New Mexico. We specialize in small bales of quality alfalfa delivered to your ranch, dairy or feed store. Deliveries are Semi-truck loads and we will also load your own truck here at the farm. |

All our hay is alfalfa hay only, not a grass mixture. We cut alfalfa on a 29 day cycle. This guarantees the hay to be at its peek feed value. The alfalfa is cut with windrowers during the day. The following night, after a light dew, two rows are raked into one row. This movement helps dry the hay and also helps to preserve the color. The light dew makes the leaves hold to the stems and prevents leaf shattering. The following night, again with a light dew the hay is baled using three balers. Two automatic bale wagons begin loading the bales and transporting them into barns at night. As you can see, we do everything possible to harvest a premium product. |

PRICES Prices
vary daily during the year. The Market is driven by supply and demand.
The price we quote is the market price, in our barns, for that day.
We Classify the hay by color.

ALFALFA -VS-
BERMUDA
When you compare prices, the best
indicator of performance is the feed value of the hay. Many times alfalfa is
compared to Coastal Bermuda grass on a cost per bale basis. Most
alfalfa bales weigh about 70 lb. per bale as compared to Coastal bales of 40 to
50 lb. The best test of value is the protein content of the feed. Our alfalfa
will test between 22 to 24 percent protein, whereas good coastal Bermuda grass
will test only 8 to 10 percent protein. A 70 lb. bale of alfalfa at 21% protein
will yield 14.7 lb. of protein, whereas a 45 lb. bale of coastal at 9% will
yield only 4.0 lb. of protein. If a 70 lb. bale of alfalfa cost $5.70 per bale delivered, then a 40 lb. bale of coastal would be
worth only $1.55 per bale. Even though the price of alfalfa may seem high, as
you can see it is worth much more.
